Strings Now Summer Workshop
workshop for students rising grades 7-8, 9-12, and adults

The CMC Atlanta Strings Now Summer Workshop with Jenn Cornell will be held at our CMC Decatur location from Friday, July 26 through Sunday July 28, 2024.  Violinists, violists, cellists, and upright bassists, grades 7 and up, intermediate to advanced levels, are welcome to attend.

The Strings Now Summer Workshop immerses student players in both solo and ensemble music making with peers and a faculty comprised of professional performers and educators.  What makes the Strings Now Workshop unique locally is our emphasis of current styles of string performance.

We honor and draw from great historical traditions of string playing, but Strings Now introduces and emphasizes new aspects of string performance, aspects such as improvisation, amplification, use of effects pedals, looping and layering, and progressive techniques like power bowing.  Many students are interested in playing strings in the context of current styles of music or using modern technology to expand the expressive palate of their instrument, but many of those students do not have the opportunity to get started, let alone an opportunity to explore playfully.  The workshop provides a gateway for doing so.  For those students who have a background in new music performance practice, the camp provides the opportunity to work intensely with professional performers on our workshop faculty in what we'd consider the student's ongoing effort to cultivate their own authentic musical voice.

Core Program Elements

  • Studio Lessons
  • Comprehensive Musicianship Program
  • Performance and Music Projects

Studio Lessons are a primary resource for developing musical skills and understanding.  The duration and curriculum of the lesson will depend on the student's age, skill level, interests, and availability.  Lessons are offered 7 days a week and scheduled to meet each student's needs.

Students generally meet with their Studio Instructor weekly for 30-, 45-, or 60-minute sessions.  Most study privately with their teacher, although we do have some students who share lessons with a

The Comprehensive Musicianship Program (or CMP) Courses and Workshops provide essential support for CMC Atlanta students. Time spent one-on-one with a studio teacher and in group classes taught by specialists work in tandem to foster musical understanding, skills, and ultimately, preparation for performance. Best of all, students who enroll in lessons are offered CMP Courses and some Workshops at no additional cost. Students who study privately elsewhere may enroll in CMP Courses and Workshops by

While some students study music with no performances in mind, most people take lessons and classes with the goal of developing the skills and confidence to play for others, either friends and family members or an appreciative audience, small or large.  After all, who wants to be alone hour after hour in a practice room, taking lessons week after week, with no end, no purpose, no clear goals in sight?
