Schubert’s Impromptus were composed in 1827.  They are eight short and contrasting piano pieces organized in two sets: the first was published during Schubert's lifetime (Op. 90 – D. 899), and the second was published posthumously as Op. posth. 142 (D 935).

The first impromptu is the longest one in this set.  It is a series of variations on 2 different themes (for more information on Theme and Variations, read Mozart - Variations on "Ah!  Vous dirai-je, Maman", K. 265).  The second one is very famous, and is a virtuoso and lively piece.  The third impromptu is very lyrical, while the last one is more dramatic and virtuoso.
