Mozart - Variations on "Ah! Vous dirai-je, Maman", K. 265/300e

Written by

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed a series of twelve variations under the French folk song “Ah! Vous dirai-je, maman”. This folk song is going to sound very familiar to you, since it has also been used in other cultures as children’s songs - its American version is Twinkle, twinkle little star.

Mozart composed this work in 1782, while staying in Paris, which justifies the use of the French folk song.

The form of this piece is Theme and Variation.  This is a very common form in music, and it implies the presentation of a theme (a melody), that will then be repeated several times, but each time slightly different than the original.
